At younger ages, it makes sense to go around in a pack, relying on immediate strength in numbers. But a pack is no longer sufficient for protection after youths are old enough to roam wider, and later into the day and night. A gang tries to solve the problem, helping intimidate adversaries by drawing assistance from those not always present. Without a gang, you have to stand on your own two feet. With a gang, you can seek a free ride on the toughness of others, even when they are not on the spot. Thus, gang colors help each member appear more dangerous than his naked reality.
